What Is Clairaudience?

Do you often hear voices in your head, like some kind of inner intelligence, or as if a higher being is communicating with you?

Well, just as a claircognizant has the ability of clear-knowing, a clairaudient can receive messages or information through clear, or psychic hearing. It’s considered to be one of the most common types of ESP.

“Clair” translates directly into “clear,” a name of Latin origin now commonly used in the French language. It can also mean “light” or “bright.” The Collins Dictionary defines the word as the “postulated ability to hear sounds beyond the range of normal hearing.”

Many refer to this type of ESP as “audial hypersensitivity.” In simple terms, it means being extra sensitive to sound.

Is Clairaudience Rare?

Clairaudience is more common than you’d think. It dates as far back as around 563 B.C.E. in the time of Siddhartha Gautama. Supposedly, Gautama was born into the Sakya tribe in Nepal and later became a teacher, philosopher and religious leader. 

We know him as the “Buddha,” or one who’s enlightened. This leader believed in something referred to as the “divine ear.” It speaks to a profound state of supreme meditation, which is a doctrine of Buddhism.


Practitioners try to reach this state through stillness and silence.

Again, clairaudience pops up in the days of Joan of Arc. She was born in 1412 and claimed to hear voices offering her divine guidance, namely archangel Michael and Saint Margaret. Later she was executed by an ecclesiastical court and accused of witchcraft due to her gift of clairaudience.

The workings of clairaudience are discussed in recent times, as well. In 2016, the Schizophrenia Bulletin published a study on the topic. Researchers investigated the differences between clairaudient psychics and those with mental illness, in relation to “hearing voices.” 

They found that those possessing the gift of clairaudience could control it positively, contrary to the other patients. The latter group experienced a more negative reception to the process with little ability to manage the situation.

Suffice it to say, there are plenty of examples of clairaudience throughout history and into the present day, beyond what we mention here. Many aren’t aware that they possess the gift, dismissing the guidance as white noise.

Furthermore, mediums and psychics also use the skill of tapping into extrasensory perception in their readings. Many claim to have the ability to communicate with the living and nonliving.

We can notice clairaudience in a variety of ways. While these indicators don’t act as doubtless evidence of the skill, they can point in the general direction.

You may be clairaudient if you:

  • Excel at auditory learning.
  • Hear voices of unknown origin.
  • Experience sudden inspiration.
  • Are introverted.

Auditory Learning

Every human has a preferred way of learning, whether it be visual, auditory, writing/reading or kinesthetic. Lexia claims that up to 25 percent of the population falls into the auditory category.

These types prefer verbal communication and will excel through speaking and listening; they’ll also be sensitive to sound. This is unlike visual learners, for example, that deal better with images. Auditory learners may also experience strong emotional reactions to music.

Unknown Voices 

Hearing voices of an unknown origin could be a clear sign that you’re gifted with these abilities, as well. Perhaps you hear external noises like whispers or other, more distant sounds. These could be coming from higher beings, such as spirits or angels.

It’s also common to hear internal voices, something akin to a specific “inner guidance” giving you direction. Many clairaudient people may sometimes hear a ringing noise, which, again, could be spirits of some sort. Be aware of these noises and try not to dismiss them.

Sudden Inspiration


Do you suddenly receive spells of vast knowledge or creativity? Or perhaps you find yourself giving surprising advice when a friend comes to you for help?

Meditation is a practice of mindfulness, which is to say, honing in on the present moment. It requires one to clear any thoughts about the past or future and sit quietly in the here and now.

Meditation, along with many other benefits, can help connect you to the spirit world. Meditation can require a tremendous amount of concentration and can feel difficult to master, but there are many ways to enhance your meditation practice.

A great example of this is found with the Buddha, who practiced meditation in his time. Gautama Buddha concentrated his mind and placed restrictions on his diet to make it happen.

Zazen Meditation

Zazen, or “sitting meditation”, is used as a path to personal enlightenment or spiritual awakening. The practice has Chinese and Indian origin and comes from the Sanskrit word “dhyana,” which means “attention” or “contemplation.”

Find a calm, comfortable space and sit upright while focusing on the motion of your breathing. You can take several different positions, depending on what works for you.

Another form of meditation comes in the form of a gong bath, also known as a sound bath or sound meditation. This method is a perfect option for newcomers who are otherwise uncomfortable with complete silence.

All that it requires is for the practitioner to lie down and listen. Per its name, you will bathe in the calming sounds of instruments like gongs and bowls. These devices create subtle vibrations that soothe the mind and promote healing and relaxation.

Through this, you can increase your focus and further enhance your clairaudient abilities.

Yoga also allows you to access an inner state of peace and awareness. Kundalini, in particular, may improve your cognitive abilities and enhance your nervous systems.

Heighten Your Auditory Perception

In 2017, a study found that individuals with autism have an “enhanced pitch spectrum” and an “increased auditory perceptual capacity.” Researchers commented on the power of these abilities and how they could be used to “minimize stress” and hear things others can’t.

This doesn’t mean, however, that neurotypical individuals can’t access the same quality of perception, though.

It does take practice but is simpler than you may realize. Sit or lie calmly and try to listen for any background noise. Dissect it and focus on each sound, like distant birds or people chattering.

Doing this basic exercise can increase your awareness and prepare you for hearing other sounds that you couldn’t access before.

You may also be able to access your clairaudient abilities by training yourself to hear astral sounds. These subtle noises can appear during astral projection, a spiritual experience where your conscious mind leaves your physical body.

Yet, due to our ever-decreasing attention spans and tech obsessions, most of us struggle with this daily task. Like most things, practice can make perfect, and this is no exception.

One primary way to do this is as follows:

Try to delay your responses when conversing with people. Instead, fully listen to what the other person is saying. Avoid planning your response or veering off-topic in your head during the process.

You might be surprised at how challenging this is. However, what happens is that, over time, you become more present and aware, priming yourself for better clairaudient experiences in the future.
